The Spear and Shield of Flavius
Founder of the spear and shield school of the Dervishes, Flavius was well known gladiator who upon achieving his freedom, walked away from his lands to seek inner peace and balance, leaving behind his spear and shield and taking up a simple walking stick and begging bowl. Once while walking in a far land, he came across a family of pilgrims being attacked by a band of brigands. Flavius took up his walking stick as a spear and his begging bowl as a shield, and fought them off, and then was granted a boon of the Gods to heal the group of pilgrims. Through this he learned the balance between peace and fighting that is inherent to the Dervish orders.
The Spear and Shield of Flavius are a 1 damage spear and +1 armor shield that when not in combat appear as a simple walking stick and begging bowl. Once per day, a meal served from the begging bowl will heal 1 hit die of damage. Once per day, on a successful hit with the blunt end the spear, it will force a sentient opponent to cease attacking for 1 minute so the Dervish may seek to turn their opponent to the way of balance. If any violence is done within view or earshot, the spells is broken and the opponent may immediately attack. None of these powers are available if the two are separated and they may only be wielded by a Dervish who has performed his rituals within the previous 24 hours.
Kati obtained the spear and shield when a vision came to her to take to the life of a beggar. She disguised herself and wandered the the countryside. On the third day, without food, she was set upon by a bandit. She stunned him with her walking stick, fed him a simple meal, healed his wounds, and spoke to him of the way of balance. The bandit was transformed to the guise of Flavius, who gave her the spear and shield, and told her to return to Zelkor’s Ferry to cleanse Rappan Athuk or die trying.
